I am a YouTube addict, and a little while back, I came across a number of YouTube videos claiming that rice water is a hair growth miracle. They claim that rice water treatments will accelerate hair growth by a huge rate (some sources say that your hair can grow several inches in 30 days). I was very skeptical about this treatment and the grand claims being made about it. I needed to find out if it was worth the hype, so I decided to try it on my own hair. Without further ado, let’s examine rice water and hair growth, my trial run with rice water treatments, and my final thoughts.
What the Heck is Rice Water?
Put simply, rice water is the water left over after soaking or cooking rice. Rice water is loaded in vitamins and minerals that are thought to make the hair more manageable, more vibrant, stronger, longer and more. It is also used as a face wash/treatment around the world. Many swear by it because of its many benefits.
Rice Water Recipes
The Fermentation Method: In this method, you need to combine your desired amount of rice with a considerable amount of water and then leave it alone at room temperature to soak. It is thought that the longer the mixture is left to soak (usually up to 24 hours, even 48 hours sometimes), the stronger the mixture will be and the better the benefit to your hair.
After the water and rice are done fermenting, the mixture should be drained and applied to the hair as a conditioning treatment. The mixture should be allowed to sit on your hair and penetrate your strands for as long as you want.
The Boiling Method: Take a few tablespoons of rice (or more if you’d like) and pour it into a medium to large pot. Add a few cups of water to the pot, ensuring that the rice is completely submerged in the water. The more water you add, the more rice water you have at the end.
Next, bring the rice to a boil. At the point that it starts boiling, or after fully cooking the rice (your choice), you can remove the pot and gather the excess water. You can use the water at that point or you can leave the water to ferment for several hours.
* You will want to rinse the rice water out of your hair after the treatment is complete.
I Tried The Rice Water Challenge
Yup, I did this treatment every week for a month. I chose the boiling method because it is supposed to produce stronger, more nutrient-dense rice water. I boiled the rice and then let it soak for 24 hours at room temperature for each treatment.
After my first rice water treatment, I did not notice a difference in the look or feel of my hair. But after the second treatment, I did notice that my hair had more shine and felt more moisturized. By the fourth treatment, I was very happy with the condition of my hair. It was easier to detangle, it felt moister, and it just looked better for a longer span of time than usual.
However, I did not notice a difference in hair growth after 30 days (honestly, I did not expect it either). My hair normally grows about a half inch per month, and it did not grow any faster by the end of this challenge.
I can tell you that the rice water challenge felt like a chore for me. Since I have a full family and a laundry list of responsibilities, I prefer a deep conditioning treatment that does not require preparation. And even though I did not experience the crazy hair growth that a lot of influencers are claiming that I should have, I did like the way that my hair felt after the treatments.

If I base my answer on my own experience, I’d have to answer that rice water is NOT a hair growth miracle. People are claiming that they saw inches of growth while using rice water treatments for 30 days. I did NOT see those results at all.
However, I do believe that if the condition of your hair is improved, you can experience more length retention and over time see an increase in the length of your hair. The rice water did give me improved shine, manageability, and moisture. This was very nice to see.
Would I do the treatments again? Yes. When I thought about this initially, I hesitated because the preparation of the rice was an extra thing to do, and I would rather slap some deep conditioner from a jar onto my head than make the treatment myself.
After some research, I found that we busy naturals don’t have to make the rice water ourselves! We can use ready-made Fermented Rice Water.
So, rice water is worth a try, but not with the expectation of growing a ridiculous amount of hair right off the bat.
Give It A Try!
If you are looking for a bomb natural deep conditioning treatment, I recommend that you give the rice water treatment a try. But I do think that it is important not to always buy into the hype. The outrageous growth claims, in my case, were false. Regarding the lack of accelerated hair growth, what I take from this trial with rice water treatments is that if a claim seems too good to be true, it probably is.
So, if you keep your expectations for hair growth on the backburner and focus more on the positive effects that the rice water has on the hair, I think you will be very happy with the rice water treatment.
